Cheap and subtle ways to tweak the 1.7 CDTI engine...

Hi guys, I'm new to this neck of the woods, I apologise if any of these questions have been asked before... :D

In short, I've got a 1.7 CDTI (if the title didn't give it away) 55 plate Astra, and I'm looking for ways to make it a bit pokier for little money, or items that could be sold on upon me leaving the car, as it's a company car, so I obviously don't want to pump too much money into it!

From what I can gather, one of the DTUK boxes look good... Can they be sold on or do they bind themselves to the cars ECU?

Next thought I had, was to fiddle with the wastegate actuator...

Does anyone have any idea what boost my engine will be running at stock and what it can take? May have to get a cheap and cheerful boost controller on there... :D

Finally, the last one I can think of is a K&N panel filter... Much advantage gained from these on this engine?

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated guys! Cheers :D

Hey mate, I'm not going to pretend like I know everything or even anything at this point in time since I'm still in the research stage of my build :D. But from what I can tell about the DTUK tuning chip what happens is that you connect it in between the ECU and the engine (looks really easy to do) and you are able to disconnect it whenever you need or want to. For the 1.7CDTI I think the only system available is the Red chip. I haven't got mine yet but I'll be getting the same car so I'll be monitoring this thread and offering my input as much as I can :). Regarding the K&N panel filter it seems that it is pointless without derestricting the airbox.
I'll post links to information on that in a sec :).

I am looking a remap from Celtic tuning, I have emailed them and got the following result-
'The 1.7 CDTi we can take from 100bhp up to 140bhp and from 177lbft torque up to 248lbft torque giving a very impressive performance gain and all within safe design tolerance of the engine and drive train components.

All of our software has been developed using a MAHA LPS 3000 rolling road. This ensures performance accuracy, reliability and also that your vehicle is MOT compliant for emissions testing.

The cost of the remap is ÂŁ360 all inclusive for which we travel to your location whether it is home or work place. This comes with a 14 day money back guarantee which gives you plenty of time to ensure it is exactly what you are after.'
Sounds very good for the money- has anyone got any feedback about the company?

Wow that sounds awesome, what I would like to know though is whether the DTUK box would stil be yield some form of improvement over those remapped results. I'm going to give then an email regarding that. Because if you can't then it seems kind of pointless dropping ÂŁ360 on the tuning service if the DTUK box does it better and with guarenteed results! But if we can do both :D

The current 1.7CDTI seems to be categorised under the name Bosch which is indeed the 100ps edition and as far as I can tell the latest version of the 1.7 diesel range. For the 100ps version you get around 125ps and an increase of around 60nm of torque.

i had a box from Andrew but for some reason my 1.7cdti did not like either but i beleive the red box is more suitable for the 1.7cdti.
Also i had problems getting the remap on my car as well as the ECU would not let it be remapped, if it was not for Tony at VXRPC getting the guys at EDS and getting a few maps of them i think i would of gave up tbh.

i think it was the crd2 box i tried, even though Andrew put on some different maps on for me it still did not feel right. Sold the box to someone on here and as far as i know he has no problems with it.
But like i said before even when i had the remap done it was a right pig to get it on, so i assumed the reason the box did not like my car was due to my ECU being akward and playing silly buggers, which somehow affected the box?

Been a fair few replies going on here...

That remap certainly seems like a good deal, especially if they'll come to you and give you 14 days to cancel it...

Going back to the turbos though, as has no one fiddle with the wastegate arm at all, or put boost controllers on them at all?

Anyone know what boost they run at stock? Can't be that much...

diesel does work differently to petrol though mate.

i cant be bothered to go into specifics, because i am too a noob, but basically the power yield is so low because the manufacturers put a lot more air in to reduce emissions.

we then come along and bump the fuel right up! and then up the boost, and up the fuel some more :p

I recently got a 1.7 CDTI 08 and after trial and error i found a remap is the best way to go. Get it tweaked right you still get real performance gains without dumping a whole load of smoke where ever you go and its just a flying wee thing on the motorway!
Last run to Leicester was 5 hours from Glasgow and achieved 55 mpg with a car full of crap!
