Hi everyone, wondered if you could help me :thumbs: had the engine light come on in the car (1.6 twinport sxi) and just found your forum and the helpful pedal trick to get the codes. :mrgreen:

Is there a big list anywhere?

Codes are:

ECN 042052
ECN 140505
ECN 000000

Also looking on the net elsewhere do I need to count the flashes?

Any help much appreciated, car doesn't seem any different so wondering what they could be?

Thanks v.much

Hi Drew.

Basically
ECN 000000 is the standard 'blank' no error codes message.

As for the other two. You need to 'translate them' The first 4 digits are the actual error code, the last 2 are 'symptoms' so to find your issues you need to search the forums for errors;
0420 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1))
&
1405 (Exhaust Gas Recirculation - EGR) unless you have keyless entry or a twintop in which case it can mean errors with grounding or sensors.

The codes depend on your car model and extra's as they can have dual meanings... See below ;)

If you had searched enough you would've found a very helpful thread explaining this all already ;)

Good luck ;)

Difficult to say on this one - recently passing the MOT suggests that the catalyst is OK.

There are two lambda (oxygen] sensors on the car, one each side of the cat. The ECU compares the reading of the two and works out how well the cat is working. If the cat is working 100%, the second sensor reading hardly changes. As the cat gets less efficient, the reading from this sensor will increase.

So, possible reasons for the fault:-

* Defective or damaged catalyst
* Air leak in exhaust system
* Defective second lambda probe
* Defective ECU

The ECU is usually good at detecting faulty lambda probes. Might be worth getting the EGR code attended to as this could be affecting the system and causing the P0420 code.

The car would need a check over with a diagnostic tester to ascertain exactly what the cause of the faults were.
