Rattling noise on startup

Hi everyone,

I recently bought an Opel Astra H GTC 2009 and I have a small problem (I'm not taking it back to the dealer, last time they put in 1L of oil too much in the engine, they're a bunch of fu**s).

When I start my car cold, it makes a rattling noise for 2 seconds and then completely disappears. Yesterday I did a small service (oil change and filters) and it's still there, but noticeably less.

I'm wondering if it could be an oil pump, perhaps any toothed belt, or its tensioner? Maybe a ribbed belt?

Has anyone had any similar issues with the car? Sounds like something is knocking, like pistons are running without oil.

Thank you all and regards

Edit: I pulled of a video on Youtube with identical noise:

Sounds like you have the Z16XER or Z18XER.

You MUST use 5w/30 DEXOS2, and you must have the engine ECU iVVT adaptions cleared at every oil change. As an owner on here just found out yesterday. Now his car is running 100x better. A GM TECH2 is required.
Hi, this is correct, I have Z16XER :)

How do I reset ECU iVVT? Will it be possible with OPCOM instead of GM TECH2? I've found the "Erace ECU" option, for factory resetting it, will this do?

Thank you for the answer

All it did was reset the Idle adaption. It has been proven on here before that OpCom does not reset the iVVT.
Just had a member on here visit me this weekend to have this done. He is now shocked at the difference. Especially low rpm driving.
I had "Reset Learned Values". Under there, it resets:

Lambda Adaptation
Throttle Position Sensor Adaptation
iVVT Adaptation

Perhaps you were looking at some other version of OPCOM? I had 3 versions, 2 of them didn't have the "Reset Learned Values", and only the 3rd one had. This should be it, ain't it?

@Chilly1G Perhaps post the software version you used,
i don't see many pre 2012 cars nowadays so my go to now is always GDS2
Indeed, I used OPCOM 2012 - VAUXCOM 120309a and I had this option. Even some options, that were shown on other versions and didn't work, they worked here (I tried disabling cruise control because I don't have it, looks like someone played it the car and turned it on, gave me some errors and on this version, I was able to successfully disable it). I was also able to read realistic KM on this versions, as others didn't support it or didn't even show up the function.

Regards

Anyway anyhow, rattling seems to be slightly back, mostly. I don't know what else to do... Any ideas? Seems something is wrong. Perhaps oil pump?

Edit: I think the oil should be good, changed a few days ago, OPEL GM DEXOS2™, SUPER SYNTHETIC. This one seems to be the best according to most forums, it should be very good for the car, so I don't think it's oil (except if anyone else thinks differently)

Most of issues i've come across with the VVT system on the XER have been down to blocked solenoids, partially blocked oil ways and occasionally the actuators themselves due to wear,
have you removed the solenoids and checked ?
Hi, I just did. Solenoids look okay. Tho, there is excesive gunk on the right side of valves... I really hope this has nothing to do with the rattling, because I'll go crazy. I cant remove gunk without spreading it everywhere

Edit: I cleaned solenoids and swapped them. Hope it's gonna be better. One was new, it was visible

My car started going very slow (acceleration) and I got an error on it 001611. Swapped the solenoid for a new one (the one on the back of the engine) and the car goes now. If anyone has problems. Anyways, the car still rattles on startup. The second solenoid looks quite new.
