we do this on all our major services as youd be surprised the difference it makes on a car with a few miles on it. Every little helps

How hard is it to take throttle body off? Any guides?

 

Yeah petrol. Dead easy was just 4 torx bolts, and removed the main air pipe and 1 breather pipe to flip the unit over while cleaning.

 

Did you have to drain the coolant beforehand? Thinking of doing this, hayne's manual says to do it but wondering if it can be done without.

 

No didnt need to undo the coolant hoses on this engine (1.4 z14xep) just undoing the larger breather pipe lets you flip the throttle body over. Didnt need a new gasket either. The coolant hose runs back to the top pipe on coolant tank so I cant see why it would need draining.

 

Does the throttle body not need re-adjusting once taken off.
Ive been tempted to do this on mine.
What milage was it on out of interest.
Mines done 40,000 now so wondering if it needs doing.

 

No there's no need to push the butterfly valve. If you take the unit of you can clean to and bottom and the edges without moving it. It's done 90k and the misses just rang to say the car is running so much better so it must be worth doing for her to recognise it lol

 

Can you write up a tutorial? Clearly a few of us would be interested in this.

 

Going to have a do of this tommorow ive alreaddy cleaned the top end. Just a case of removing the 4 bolts and cleaning it.
Did you remove the battery when cleaning it?

 

Yeah i had been putting it off for weeks because i thought it was a big job but really wasnt. No need to disconnect the battery

This is for the z14xep 1.4 twinport and from what i remember

1. Undo the jubilee clip at the top of the throttle body then pull the pipe off.
2. Unplug the sensor plug.
3. Remove the 4 torx t25 or t30 bolts and give the tb a wiggle and it should pop off.
4. Undo the larger breather pipe at the rocker cover side this will allow you to flip the unit over with enough room to put a bag or something over the hole into the engine and slide a tray (i used the top of a plastic tub) on top of the engine to catch all the crap that runs off while cleaning. (No need for any other pipes to be removed)
5. Use some carb cleaner (wynns one for halfords worked for me http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...duct_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_202903_langId_-1_categoryId_255221 make sure it comes with the straw as i spotted some cans without it in halfords).
Spray straight onto the butterfly and wipe with a old toothbrush and kitchen towels. Dont push the valve open theres no need (i scrubbed it quite hard and didnt open so must take some force to open it). I used a flat blade screwdriver to get the stubben stuff of that was in recesses.
6. Once shiny put it all back together and turn ignition to on for a 30 seconds or so and should hear it click(not sure if it self adjusts at this point)
7. Enjoy smoother ride

I always thought the car had clutch judder but turn out to be from this.

 

Just done mine not driven it yet. Took 30mins including the breather pipes being cleaned.
Was encouraged to do it after watching wheeler dealers haha.

Whats that thing looks like brass that sits in the inlet just under the throttle body?

have a look at this gasket, i cleaned the throttle body today and after cleaning the gasket it looks like this, is this okay or do i need a new one ?

im gona add the pictures of my car's throttle body how it looked like when i opened it all up ... my eyes were O O ...

well its easy but it will take some time, people say it takes about half an hour but it doesn't it take atleast hour an half if you cleaning it very well,

just make sure you don't spray inside too much, if you do then clean it well with a cloth so its not wet and clean inside ...

and if your cleaning the throttle body after doing so do clean the EGR for better result, i havn't done it so as it got dark, will do it tomorrow in the morning if the weather is nice (but i didn't start the car or driven yet after cleaning the throttle body as i wanted to clean the EGR and then go for the drive and put the foot down and clear the lose bits which may have gone inside)

go easy if do clean it ..

 

It the starting it afterwards bit I'm worried about!!

My gasket looks nothing like that mines a green rubber ring.
I would replace that though for piece of mind as a gasket is only a couple of quid.

 

Yeah I have no idea about the diesels but that looks well clogged up.

I had chance to properly drive her car today and she was right it's like a new car. No judder or hesitation setting off or coming off throttle. All nice and smooth. I couldn't see any light when looking at the butterfly before cleaning so obviously effects idle and jumpiness when dropping gears etc

Can't believe how much difference it's made for under £7.

 

well the gasket was painted the brown bits thats where is no paint as the paint has come off it,
