In November I brought a second hand twintop with 61k miles on clock. Its more of a project atm. I Serviced the gearbox oil today, but i was shocked because there was only about 0.5l of oil that drained. The engine is the Z16XER which I believe it has the F17 box on this. Am I correct to say the gearbox oil capacity should be 1.6l? There's no leaks so I'm slightly concerned why only 0.5l was in there.

i had that on my sri but i noticed a dark stain on the underside of the car mustve had an oil leak at some point before i got it and leaked down to it stopped maybe the seals round the drive shafts i changed the pan gasket refilled it and its not leaked in a year so far have a look at yours for any tell tale signs of old leaks

Fitzys I never thought of that. Ill have a good look tomorrow. There wasn't any signs of leakage around the pan, old gasket was Genuine GM and made a really good seal. Had to use a mallet to break the seal. If there is a leak it must be higher up. I hope not though.

I'm hoping its just a case the previous owner had a clutch change sometime and they didn't drain the oil first and its a case of they let the oil run out the drive shafts and didn't top it up.

The leveling plug on the f17 gearbox is quite high so yes it will not drain completely. If you want to drain it fully you would have to take the differential cover off and get a new gasket for the cover. And I had this problem with one manufacturer saying its 75w80 but I called vauxhall other manufacturers and they all saying it's 75w90. If you're not sure check on comma oil website they will show you all the correct fluids.
