Cooling fan comes on when engine cold ??

Evening all

New to the site after just buying a 2014 Astra J 1.6 petrol 113bhp i believe ?

First thing i noticed was a lack of power so i got a diagnostic test done which came back as Mass Air sensor. Before getting a new one i have checked the filter and induct pipe to filter box to make sure all is how is should be. ( looks fine and not blocked )

Then i have just noticed that the engine cooling fan comes on as soon as i start the car ( even when engine cold ) is this standard on this car ?
With the cooling fan on high and the start of the air induct pipe just behind the radiator would the fan cause to much air or draw air away from the induct pipe.

Seen utube clips of how to test mass air sensor with multimeter ( anyone recommend )

How can i unplug the cable to the fan to see is it makes a difference, if not i will get a new mass air flow sensor hoping that will solve it.. no engine management light unless unpluged..

will say that the car had a bump on the front which needed a new radiator and replaced and all fixed before i bought the car.. hopefully they put the front end back together properly :)

thanks all

Thanks Mollygoogle

It is poor power delivery and does seem to hold back on full throttle, possible maf problem as not getting the required air ? I've come from a peugeot 307 HDI 110bhp which had alot more response. Agree the 1.6 petrol 113bhp is not what i expected but wont know fully until i check or replace maf sensor.

Thanks Big Dave, didn't know the seals could dry up if not used. I'll remember that :)

After driving home from work with the temperature at normal 90 ? I thought i would check under the bonnet to which the fan was not running so that rules out it being wired directly to live.
Also when putting the air con on, it kicks in the fan and goes off when air con is turn off so that seems to be working fine also. I will of course check to see if the radiator fan comes on when i start the car in the morning when cold to rule anything else out ( as i've never know of a radiator cooling fan to come on when engine cold )

I did check all the connections the last day or 2, and also took all the air box off completely and made sure it was all fitted back correctly and a tight fit between joins. I also checked the mass air sensor with a multimeter and that also seems to be giving readings although it didn't when i had a diagnostic test done last week. I also seem to have a bit more response with thottle after checking maf and air box ducting.. Maybe a connection was not quite pushed in correctly.

I would still like to buy my own diagnostic tester which i can hook up to my laptop and check the live readings from time to time so if anyone can suggest a cheap and simple diagnostic test to check for error codes and live data that would be great.

Thanks all for your suggestions, hopefully checking all the connections and air mass sensor / air box as put the car right although like an earlier post, the 1.6 astra hasn't the power i thought it would if needed ( which leads me onto my final question )

I didn't buy the car for power but its nice to have the option when over taking, i always try and keep my rpm down for fuel economy so would fitting a pedal box or getting it tuned/mapped to a higher bhp be an advantage without drastically increasing the fuel usage.

thanks again

After cleaning the car today and just checking under the hood, i have noticed some coloured coolant around the marked area in the picture, but noticed it when it was getting dark so will investigate further tomorrow. what part is this as there is an electric connection attached to it so i'm guessing a temperture sensor ? maybe this is the reason the radiator fan was coming on when engine was cold although tonight the fan would come on about every 30 seconds for a few seconds and then go off. Could it just be a seal gone ?. thanks all

The more i explore, the more i find that could be at fault. Although it seems a common problem.

After driving home from work which takes about 10 minutes, only the 1 pipe off the radiator is hot ? ( water pump side ) but the temperature never goes above 90 though.
Could i be right in saying the thermostat is not operating correctly for the coolant to circulate around or does it have to go to 105 degrees to work ? the pipe from the radiator to the thermostat housing is the pipe staying cold. Is there a thermostat in the housing or does it come as one unit. I'm off work Wednesday so weather premitting would like to take it off and check. thanks
