Why do I get the car with wrench (spanner) light?

Anyone know why I get the yellow car with wrench light when I insert my key but don’t start the car? If I start the car with it there it will stay on with the ignition running. I can take the key back out and put it back in again and it goes away.

No error codes. Why does it come up when I insert the key to start the car and why does removing the key and reinserting it make it go away?

Thoughts? Alternator is fine. Battery is a little old, but works, but is definitely on its way out. Is that why? Or does it come on for another reason?

Thanks!

Pic to show what I’m talking about.

No it’s never done that. I’ve had this car 10 years, since 2008, and it’s never done it but does it lately. It’s not doing a check. It stays on. If I start the car it will stay on. It only does it sometimes. If I remove the key when it happens and reinsert, if won’t do it. It’s not normal. It’s an issue and I don’t know what for. What does the car with wrench mean? Error with what? Our manual doesn’t have as much info in it as the manual you guys get.

if the spanner light is on solid (not flashing) with the engine running it indicates a fault affecting the engine or transmission,
what scanner are you using to check for codes and are you scanning the transmission module as well as the ECM ?

IIRC, if it stays lit with the ignition on but without engine running, but then generally goes out once started, then it's indicating that there is a stored fault code in the ECU.

As it's sometimes on with the engine running, there it's indicating there is a fault somewhere.

Needs to be put on a diagnostic reader to find out what fault code(s) are caught in the ECU memory.

It comes on (only sometimes) when the key is inserted and ignition is on. It stays on when engine is started. If I want to get it to go away, simply taking the key back out and putting it back in makes it go away (or if I started the engine already, shutting the car off and starting again)

It doesn’t flash. It stays solid. That light never comes on here on initial startup for our Astras over here.

I’m using an obdII scanner. Our port is under the steering wheel down by the hood latch (bonnet lol) we do not use the port under the hand brake it’s non functioning.

I ordered opcom but it doesn’t work on our cars because it can’t read the vin. It will show you things but you can’t do anything with it. There are no engine codes with my obdII scanner I’ve scanned for transmission as well yes. The only code I occasionally get is p0420 which isn’t related and I’ve had long before this warning light.

Would it come on if your battery was weak?

I believe I read somewhere if there is fault codes stored but there’s no issue the spanner light will stay on until the engine is started and maybe a few seconds after.
If there is no fault codes stored then it goes out after a few seconds of turning on the ignition.
Spanner light is related too electric fault. Mine came on the other week after I forgot to plug back in my recirc valve after changing it [emoji23]
