Wonder if anyone can help me with a problem I'm having with my tyre compressor.

I got a Ring Automotive RAC630 for Christmas (exciting eh!) and used it for the first time today after getting some lovely new Uniroyal Rainsport 2s fitted to the front. Plugged it in and set the pressure to 38, switched it on and the unit then pumped up the tyres to 38. The unit switched off and for some bizarre reason the display started counting down in psi just like it was loosing air. This happened on both tyres, I checked the pressures with a separate tyre pressure gauge and its now showing 34psi.

Any ideas if I'm doing something wrong? I got my foot pump out to do it manually after but the rubber hose split!

Unit seemed screwed in properly. Isn't 38 psi what is recommended for the 18s? Manual says 39 for my engine and the cdti.
