Bought an 05 Astra 53k on the clock 3 weeks ago. Needed a service as last one was done in 2010 so booked in sharpish with Kwik Fit for FS.

So, had the spark plugs changed, air filter, oil filter, and fully synthetic oil 5w-30. Drove away feeling pretty pleased with myself
, stopped at supermarket for cigarettes.
Come back to car, start her up, Oil pressure light stays on and engine sounds like a diesel! Restarted, all fine, lights go off again as usual!
Took it back to Kwik Fit, they checked oil level, coolant level, all seems fine so on my way again. No problems along the way.

Now, once every few startup, same oil pressure light comes on and engine rattles like a diesel. Pushing the accelerator down normally resolves this or restart is needed. After restart all is good again and oil light has never come on whilst driving.

Does anybody have any clue as to whats going on? Kwik Fit have no bleeding clue and my local mechanic says its nothing to worry about as long as the light doesnt come on whilst driving.
Any help would be appreciated as I've wanted an Astra for a long while now, and this problem so early on in ownership is stressing the merde out of me!

Tough one this one.

Try the pedal test see if any faults come up.

With foot on brake and accelerator, turn your key to position 2 so dash lights come on but not starting the engine.
Where your mileage is, if there are any fault codes it will say ECN****** where the * are numbers. If there are any make a note of these and come back (Y)

Have you checked the oil levels? If the engine sounds more normal once it's warmed up a bit, it may be just that the engine is taking a second to lube up :) Its worth a check anyway.

Thanks for your replies. I should have mentioned oil level is normal.
Also, when I took it back to Kwik Fit they hooked it up to the Bosch diagnostic tool and there were no fault codes at all!
Havent tried the pedal test but will give that a go.
Just trying to find the cheapest solution here but could it be, just maybe, that its a faulty oil pressure switch?

I wonder what oil too if thicker say 15/40 this may have your delay with the oil pressure switch.

Seems odd it was fine before also i use genuine filters as had problems years ago with non gm.

Is it worth going down to Kwik Fit again and asking them to perform an oil change again to see if this resolves the problem? How do I convince them that it is the oil causing the problem?
As mentioned by myself and other replies, had no problems with old oil even though it had gone 20k+ without a service.
Thank you all for your replies.

Well if you saw the bottle I doubt there's an issue, and the Fuchs stuff is supposed to be very good.

The only thing I'm thinking is either oil pump or perhaps filter. Maybe if the filter is a cheapo one there's some sort of blockage, but have never heard of filters causing issues as they're hardly sophisticated kit.

Did they do an engine flush, sometimes engines with long intervals between services which are flushed can release built up gunge n block oil pipes?? Just a thought? I know on my vectra 1.9cdti i was told this...

Hi all thanks for all your replies. Just done a pedal test and no codes at all!! Drove it around a bit today with no oil light whilst driving. Only comes on when restarted whislt engine is hot or cold:swear:
@Callum and Bigtee; no engine flush was done, so...now im even more at a loss as to what could be wrong!

What engine type/size is the car fitted with???

Sounds like the oil is draining back to the sump whilst stationary, and is then taking a long time to pump back up when the engine is restarted. The rattling/Diesel noise you are hearing is the hydraulic tappets not pressurising with oil and therefore moving to their correct operating position.

There could be a couple of reasons for this:-

1). A defective filter fitted at the time of the service is allowing oil in the pressure feed line to drain back to the sump (as someone else mentioned above).
2). An existing problem with the vehicle, which was present when you bought it, has now reared its head - such as a sticking oil pressure relief valve.

I would get the filter checked or changed first (should be able to be done without draining the oil out), before moving on to giving the oil pump and associated pipework the once over..

Thanks for your help mate. Will be back to report if this makes any difference.

Seen that before with cheap filters.
