Paintwork problems?

Hiya
Has anyone had any issues with paintwork seeming to flake off?

Technical grey Astra J.

Came back to car after work and there's a chunk which just seems to have fallen off for no reason. Obviously I dunno if someone has bumped it but there's no evidence of any contact at all. So weird!

The fact that it's come off so neatly across the primer says to me that it's a chemical reaction (or lack thereof) which has caused that from when it was sprayed at Vauxhall, as any physical contact to have cause that would have left it looking far less neat underneath. I would definitely take it to the dealer and kick up a stink. If they don't play ball, get on to VX customer services and don't be afraid to escalate it to higher up staff if they don't sound interested. You will get results if you aim high enough, but you will have to probably speak to a few plebs on the way.

As suggested above you need to be confident of shutting off any wriggle room. Clear cut case of a poor paint job, paint doesn't just flake off unless it's not been baked on properly. However it's going to come down to whose liability it is, e.g. if you've not owned it from new how do you know it's not someone's iffy repair job?
Could be worth trying to find someone with a paint thickness meter.

The only reason I ask is that it is occasionally the case that with certain bulk-purchase schemes manufacturers sometimes use them as a way of feeding factory rejects onto the road. For example I know the AA driving school cars are all rejects, then AA sell them on as used cars when they're six months old. The most common cause for this is paintwork defects, which are sometimes obvious and sometimes not.

However Motability cars are dealer ordered and supplied so I highly doubt this is the case.

Ahhh right I get ya.

I don't think I'm going to get to the bottom of it to be honest. I will ask the fella re motability cos I might be getting it mixed up with his insignia which we bought about the same time from a different dealer.

With someone earlier having said it isn't factory primer maybe it's not a factory reject, although worth bearing in mind. Thanks for your help on this.

Factory primer that's gone wrong or off or whatever else causing a little batch of rejects could conceivably be a different colour.

But if it was a multitude of smart repairs they should have been relatively obvious when looking in detail, such as when purchasing. I'd get hold of a paint depth gauge and compare the affected panels with equivalent panels the other side of the car. If it's different you know the entire panel's been sprayed, if not then you're probably right and it's a multitude of smart repairs. (Y)
