Been a quiet day home schooling the mancub. Also after almost a week of none stop car work I went to sleep last night with my hands radiating pain, and woke up this morning barely able to make a fist! 馃槄
Resting them today. Ex army and I have problems with early onset arthritis pain 馃槙

But here鈥檚 what yesterday brought.
wrestled the old, seized on droplinks off the focus and fit a new horn (hopefully it passes it mot on Thursday 馃馃徎). Only had to cut and grind one

Also got the welding sorted on the fiesta

Oh and finally got a handbrake gaiter fitted on the Astra

Thought I鈥檇 do a little garage/workshop segment if anyone鈥檚 interested... not that it matters, it鈥檚 my thread and you鈥檒l read what I give you to read 馃槅

Its a good size, detached 5m x 2.5m single with a pent roof. I鈥檒l just show you some pics from the start of the renovation to now.

First I used an angle grinder with a shroud and an amazing cement grinding disc to grind the floor as smooth as possible. Labour intensive and mega dusty but worth it.
34330

Next I filled in the cracks in the slab and around the edges and repaired the broken entrance slab.

34332

After that came painting the walls. First a fresh coat of white on the top half then the lower grey half.
34333

34334

Next step was the floor. First a sealing primer and then the hardcore paint.

Yeah, I mean most of this was done in the first lockdown. The benches were done in the 2nd lockdown. Just wanted to show where The magic happens 馃馃ぃ

Ok so after finding a lot of bad corrosion on the Focus鈥 rear sills, I鈥檝e been going at the jobs on the Fiesta today to get it MOT ready.
The Focus has nearly 200k miles and really isn鈥檛 worth the money to get it sorted. The Fiesta however has 65k miles and a new clutch. It鈥檚 my partners car and she much prefers it to the tank (Focus) as she calls it 馃槅.

So job one I replaced the 2 rear number plate bulbs. Easy enough.
Job 2 was the handbrake efficiency. The auto adjusters in the drums are terrible on these cars so my first thought was to get the drums off, tidy them up and re-seat the shoes. Then adjust the handbrake from inside the car.

34361

34352

And cleaned up a little

34353

Popped them back on and adjusted the screw beside the handbrake lever (using Haynes manual). It now ends on the 3rd click instead of the 6th! And the cars still as a rock with the parking brake on 馃憤馃徎

34354

Next job was the exhaust blow.
The flange between the cat and flexi pipe is very loose, rattling around in my hand!
Turns out there was no gasket between them at all. Luckily I had one in a draw 馃憣馃徎.
The 2 15mm nuts came off surprisingly easy and I鈥檝e got them soaking in some Pepsi to clean the rust off 馃ぃ

Also cleaned up the surfaces of the flanges. I鈥檒l get more pics when the nuts are ready to re-fit.

Busy day inside the garage as it鈥檚 been chucking it down all day 馃檮
Got my remaining Fiesta parts together but I had to order a new exhaust gasket as mine didn鈥檛 fit.
Front discs and pads and 2 cv boot kits.
34377

Then I wire wheeled and rust treated the flanges and hangers on the new back box for the Astra.

Wire wheeled
34381

34382

34383

34384

Then treated with some K-rust I had left over and left for a couple of hours.
34385

34386

Tomorrow I鈥檒l give it some anti rust primer and hard wearing paint to protect it.

After that I gave the workspace a much needed tidy and reorganisation

34387

34388

34389

And annoyingly realised the Astra has at least one slow puncture 馃槫

Oh also, nearly forgot, I swapped the rusty exhaust nuts into some lemon juice and white vinegar over night and they came out loads better!

Another day of non stop rain so I鈥檝e been tidying and organising the workshop again. As well as getting some primer and paint on the back box flange.
Taped up ready
34405

34406

I put the primer and paint in some warm water while I made a brew. It鈥檚 freezing in the garage and this should just make the spray more even.
34407

I know it鈥檚 BBQ paint but it鈥檚 high temp, durable and I already had some 馃し馃徏鈥嶁檪锔
34408

Then I did 3 coats of primer and 3 coats of paint.

34409

34410

34411

34412

34413

I鈥檝e ordered a new fitting kit (gasket, bolts, springs) and I鈥檒l get it fitted when I鈥檓 ready to get the rear bumper off and remove the tow bar.

Nice package arrived today. Big thank you to Barneyrussel for the generosity 馃檹
Vec C 1.9 intake and engine performance flush.

34419

Been cracking on with the Fiesta brakes and cv boots. N/S is done but I鈥檝e had to order a hub puller for the O/S as the spline will not come out the hub with any amount of persuasion 馃サ

N/S:
34420

34421

34422

34424
34423

Exhaust gasket also arrived so when the puller comes tomorrow I 鈥渟hould鈥 get all the jobs done.

I'm sure some garages must have partially sighted mot testers, i know of a garage that did a few welding repairs using silicone  on an old transit but the owner was just happy to get the pass so he could carry on working it, it was the inner wings, under the headlights and difficult to get to but that's not the point!

Small update today.
Got both discs and pads done on the fiesta but that o/s drive shaft is seized into the hub so it鈥檒l be a job for the garage before it鈥檚 MOT. Even with the hub puller, wd40, hammer and punch and a little heat, it ain鈥檛 budging! 馃サ Had to order yet another exhaust gasket too, as they sent me the wrong one 馃槫. It鈥檚 a crush ring fitting.

Anyway, back to the Wagon.
I just fit the Vec C intake with relative ease.

Also noticed some light sludge in the murky brown coolant reservoir, no oil in it and no mayo under the oil cap. Also no white smoke or overheating so I think it just needs a good flush and change. Probably never been done over 60k miles.

I apologise for another non Astra update to this thread. I promise I have things to do on it and I will get back to it ASAP. It鈥檚 just been raining heavily for over a week straight, no break! My garden is a lake 馃う馃徏鈥嶁檪锔
So it鈥檚 been another day in the garage with my music and tools

There鈥檚 still more to do and I want extra shelf space underneath the worktops, but it鈥檚 getting better every time I go in there.
