Hi,

If there is a car which has done say 100K and the engine was swapped for one which had done just 10K, what would the mileometer read?

Is the reading stored in ECU?

If you swap an engine do you need to swap the ECU? (maybe the ECU holds calibration data?)

I'm sure someone will know the answer!

as far as I know the milleage will stay at 100k, you will need to have the ECA reprogrammed with the milleage of the new engine

It will definitely stay at the original milage. Mine had an engine change at around 56k. The mileage counter says nearly 127k.

Mileage is for the car not engine, modifying it is called clocking and illegal although it is obviously a plus point if you can prove the engine is newer than car on sale.

The mileage is stored in the ECM as well as the clocks and can be accessed through diagnostics.

If the two don't match to within about 100 miles, serious questions need to be asked as to why.
