I have a 1.9 CDTI Astra that's now done 100K. The gearbox bearings were replaced at about 45K and there is now a slight whine in 3rd and 4th gear when the car is not under load. When under load you can't hear the noise.

There is no movement of the gearstick in any gear although you can possibly feel the slightest of vibrations in 3rd and 4th if you hold the gearstick.

How many miles will it last before the gearbox goes pop?

The car isn't worth a vast amount and it's about to be retired from daily use and a another car will do the bulk of our miles however it would be useful to keep it as a spare car for tip runs and some winter use so going forward it'll only do 1K-2K miles a year.

Will the gearbox last a few years with that sort of mileage without the expense of a rebuild or does it rapidly go down hill?

Would an oil change now help extend it's life or is it too late for that? Presumably the damage is already done.

A gearbox can go at anytime really my advice to get them replaced asap

Thanks for the advice and I've just spoke to them and they were very helpful..

The cost is somewhere between £320 and £670 depending on whether they just fix the knackered bearings or if they change them all.

He also said they've had gearboxes last much longer than they expected and much less but he did offer the advice to drop the gearbox oil and have a look at it. If it's black and full of metal bits then it's *******, if it's clean then refill it and it may last a few more months.

Go to the chap in Halifax iv just took mine there on Monday. I travelled up from Somerset mine was whining in 3rd and 4th aswell. Only took Andy 2 hours and was £275 im really happy with it.

That is cheap, presumably he just changed one or two of the bearings for that cost.

I'm in Worcestershire and a 6 hour round trip to Halifax doesn't really appeal although it is cheap. Your drive from Somerset to Halifax must have been a 9 hour round trip.

The people I recommend are M32 specialists and used by Vauxhall Motors Luton as an approved repairer for warranty failures. It might be easier for you to reach?? https://www.eco-torque.co.uk/

No he replaces all the bearings. My endcase bearings had already been replaced. I had no movement in the gear stick just a whine in 3rd and 4th. We stayed in a travelodge in Halifax and drove back the next afternoon after it was done all in it cost £370 with the hotel and fuel and we made a weekend of it. Hes just a bloke on his own that dosent have many overheads in a small workshop and buys in baulk. Of course this dosent mean other companies are bad. Tho I would travel to him again as the girlfriend wants an astra now aswell.

If he's changing all of the bearings then that is very cheap and if you have the time then a weekend away is a good idea too.

The cheapest I've found local to me is £550 which I didn't think was too bad.

usually its the 6th gear bearing that fails, mine went through the end casing and lost 5th and 6th completely..
