41,000 miles, 56 reg, standard, cost me £2100 to have it fixed, recon gearbox, clutch and dmf all at same time

 

im on my 3rd (Y)

 

1.3 cdti van bearings went at 120k cost £720

 

1.9 CDTI, 70,000 miles = Whine in 5th and 6th (no gear stick movement though), warranty wants me to pay for investigation, whereby 5 garages have confirmed that it's a failed bearing!! FFS!!! Perhaps it's just a matter of time....?

Anyone else have the "whine" noise, but just put up with it?

Serious design flaw by Vauxhall, can't understand why they used what they did :nah:

 

On its way out I would say chap, mine had the same problem,

 

VxR gearbox was on its way out when I got the car totally stock, being replaced now under the warrenty. The M32 gearbox is faulty and vauxhall knows this.

 

Its not the gears!!!! its the Bearings that fail, i would suggest the wrong fluids being used

 

Had mine replaced 13 months ago & on its way out again on 51k

 

31,000 miles 3 years old and mine went. Completely standard

 

Guys without trying to hijack the thread can i ask what oil you are using when you have had your box replaced especially the posters who are on their 3rd box etc. Reason i ask is as iv been told the oil used by vauxhall is ******.

 

Nothing to do with gearbox oil mate, have a look at Pecky's thread in the technical area. (Y)

 

The main reason people feel the m32 box fails is cause the standard gearbox oil is pants as when it gets hot it looses its lubrication properties so cant keep the bearings lubed and they wear out quickly as a result.. need to change it to a decent 75/80 semi synthetic oil if running a standard diff, with a lsd people recommend a 75/90 iirc?

Currently im on my third box but since it was rebuilt 20k miles ago its not had the standard gearbox oil and has been good! Cars on 57k atm too.. but the thing is with the box its kinda hit and miss as some people have no end of issues with it and some are very lucky buggers who have no issues at all even with 150k plus!!

 

Well mine was replaced under warranty so it would be the crappy gearbox oil Vauxhall use that's in it. But just had some fresh oil as the clutch and flywheel were changed

ZS and myself arguing the design of the M32 is flawed and more than should be expected go wrong, ArdenVXR arguing that they're great boxes and they only ever go wrong due to being abused.

 

Mine hadn't failed, but it wasn't far away at about 55,000 miles or so. Bearings replaced before it went completely.

 

67K after many trips to the ring and spa, with three or four trips to closed circuits a year in the UK.Plus work

Full set of Timken bearings plus labour £800

 

I think the issue with the M32 comes from the torque limt on the M32 being 235ish the 1.9 and VxR's stock torque is about 235 so the gearbox has reached its torque limit right of the bat.

 

On the way out. Movement in 1st, 6th and slight whine in 6th. (but its been on its way out for last 10 months)

Car is standard 57 plate on 74k (although I beleive original owner had a new gearbox at 22k)

 

Does make me wonder why they opted to fit the F40 into the Vectra though. I know that the F40 will not fit an Astra due to the mountings being different on the M32, but you'd have thought if they know they have a stronger box, they'd design the Astra to fit it as well?

I don't know much about this sort of thing, but it just seems logical if you're going to fit a strong gearbox to one model, why fit a weaker gearbox to another model with the same engine? :err:

 

Its also space within the engine bay if I remember rightly

there just isn't enough within the Astra bay for the F40 gearbox

 

But why didn't they design it with more space from day one? :shrug:

 

mine failed at 36,000 miles. luckily thanks to the guys on here managed to save the box and just get bearings done (Y)

 

08 plate se van im on 39000 miles and for the past 2 months ive noticed gear stick movement in 1st and 6th only, im just going to wait for it to fail go bang then sort it out under warranty...

On my own 1.9 120 van it went at 44k and 4 years old. Works van 1.7 100 it went around 66k, then needed replacing for a 2nd time just over 100k. My own 1.7 100 (remapped to 130ish) is fine touch wood, but then it's only 18 months old and only just done 10k!

I've just come back from seeing a 1.9 120 van today with a view to buying it. One owner from new, 56 plate, 88k, FMDSH. As soon as I brought up the clutch to the biting point the gear stick jumped backwards about 4cm! So that's another one you can add to the 'failed' list. DMF was buggered on it too as it had the death rattle immediately after starting her up.

 

My 1.7CDTI has a F23 in it (5 speed, reverse below 5th). M32 is a 6 speeder with reverse beside 1st.

 

The 1.7 CDTi vans were the only ones to come with an M32, if I remember correctly (Y)

 

My GTC supposedly has an M32 gearbox in it - It's only done 6.5k, is it worth changing the fluid in it while it's still relatively young to try and make it live any longer?

 

AFAIK it's different in the J, I think the bearing issue has been resolved. I may be wrong, but this is my recollection.

 

this is rediculous. Where was the recall the tight fisted twts. My original f23 in my G is on 323,000miles and has outlasted the 2.0dti lump which i have just replaced :kissit: EDIT: its now on a 2.2dti lump, in the same van.

 

There wont be a recall as the total number of warrenty cases are around 4%.. as most h's are out of warrenty we are now seeing them fail and grt fixed outside of vx's knowledge so they dont 'know' the m32 box isnt great!

 

My 2008 astra 1.9 gearbox failed at 83,000, had DTUK Green box on there since 37,000. So didnt do too bad
