wondering if anybody has had this issue before, car cut out and won't start but there's a little letter f in the display. The car is a 1.6 petrol 5 speed manual.

been in a while since I posted on here but wondering if anyone could help.

cheers

F relates to the outside temperature sensor. It's telling you it has a fault. The sensor has gone **** up and is either disconnected or U/S. A new one is only around a tenner from the dealer, or slightly cheaper on ebay.

No connection with your car not starting. Any other warning lights lit up? Car/spanner light flashing on and off for example - which is indicating an immobiliser problem.

The f literally lit up the second the car cut out, that's why I guessing it's connected. No other light are on and nothing is flashing.

With car off put foot flat down on brake and accelerator simulationously, turn key so dash lights up but noy starting car, codes should begin to flash up on the mileage display, may take a couple of attenpts to get it working. Post the numbers here and may help diagnose the problem. As dave says f usually is the outside temp sensor but it can show for easytronic problems I think and possibly cim faults but I'm not 100% sure! Best just to get some codes to work with first and go from there.

Yeah I see what you mean about the f but it's on the botttom line of the display not the top line, Ile have a go at the pedal test and see if I can get some codes.

I've had a bit of a look on the Internet and seems can happen because of a number issues.

Have found, easytronic, cim faults, early signs of battery or alternator, one guy even had a dodgy starter motor which was causing an electrical spike and causing faults - these are literally just from posts on forums I've found.
Not actual knowledge

You could rule out the battery/alternator by trying to jump start the car, and rule out the starter motor by trying to bump start it. It'd be good to try get a code reader on it too if you cant get the pedal test to work

I've tried to power up the starter with a piece of wire and the starter spins, but there's no fuel. I'm guessing no fuel and the starter doesn't spin it's gotta be related to the cim or engine ecu, now when I connect the scanner it doesn't find the engine ecu so I'm thinking it much be the engine ecu. Any ideas??

It could be something like that yeah, but best to check the simple things first before moving on.
Have you had a chance to attempt to jump the car? You can also get a battery voltage reading through the secret menu, Hold down 'settings' till you hear a beep then scroll through using 'bc' till you find the battery voltage. And also have you checked your fuses too?

I haven't tried to jump start the car because there's no fuel being delivered, I've checked the battery and starter first thing can't check the charging cause the car won't start, checked all the relays and fuses and they all seem ok. The fact that the scanner won't connect or cominicate with the engine ecu is just making me think throats my problem.

It is seeming like it isn't it if you can't get a pedal test reading or communicate with the engine ecu. No chance you've got opcom is there, that way you can see if it connect to all the other ecus and just not the engine one?

i have got opcom at home but ive had to leave the car in work, i used a brand new verus ultra snap-on machine which cost the guy 7k and it couldnt find the engine ecu but could find everythin else, there were quite a few codes in the intrument panel bit nothin that would stop it starting or cause it to cut out.

my next question is does any one know if i can just buy and ecu kit from ebay and replace the full thing or could i just replace a part of it. Moneys abit tight at the moment so if i can just buy the kit and change it at home without having to pay a specialist to re-code anything that would be really helpful.

Would a battery go dead while I was driving? It's less than 18months old also would a dead battery bring all the dash lights on radio headlights wipers all work but no fuel and no sign of the starter turning?

ive done a bit of googling and it seems as though the ecu is quite common because of the location on top of the engine and the hot and cold temperature changes can affect it.

If the alternator isn't charging it then yes it could do all of those things. I still think it's likely to be the ECU, just check the battery first.

I believe the ECU needs to be reset first but I'm speaking from a not very knowledgable memory
