hey all. i decided to give my egr another clean out today after an annoying bout of judder under acceleration.

ham-fisted bugger that i am, i managed to strip 1/4 inch of thread out of the top left hole in the manifold when putting the egr back on. it still nips up...just , but will continue to turn if i put more than a little effort into it.

i've vaguely heard about helicoils and rethreading things, but got no clue how much it'd cost, or if it's even necessary.

any tips ..other than use a lighter touch next time ?

you will need to re tap the thread and clean the threads on the bolt

cheers. just read up on re-tapping, and found a youtube video of how it's done.


looks kinda tricky for a ham-fist, no? and kinda expensive to get the tools for.
i'm not planning on doing it more than once, i can tell you !

any ideas what someone who knows what they're doing would charge? is it something simple that could be done without removing the manifold, or should i be looking at a 2nd mortgage?

its very easy to do and could be done in place (depending on the condition of the bore) and a tap set can be picked up quite cheap

No offence, but if you aren't 100% sure about what you are doing, as you will probably admit, then you risk damaging the part further by trying to tap it out. Worst case is snapping the tap off in the manifold.

You might be looking at about 1 to 2 hours labour at a garage to rectify this - certainly cheaper than a replacement manifold!

A guy in my area used go round to the different dealerships, and all he did was remove snapped bolts/sparkplugs/glowplugs and repair damaged threads. He didn't charge much either - think he did it to get out of the house, away from the wife! :lol: Might be worth checking out a friendly local garage in your area to see if they know of someone who does this.

no offence taken, i assure you. given that i can mess up a simple job like fitting an egr i have no doubt in my ability to mess up a re-tap.

i'll make a few calls and see if i can find me a helicoil guy.
