Hi
I am looking for advice for correct oil for 2008 1.6 club petrol. The manual says 5w/30 but my service book has been stamped by the vauxhall dealership 10w/40.I am going to purchase oil from vauxhall but i am unsure which to buy or if to get oil changed back to manual spec.is this normal practice to have 10w/40 in an astra 08.

Any help much appreciated.
Cheers

Thanks for advice
Thinking of getting an oil change and going back to 5w/30
Hopefully no damage will have been done to engine.
Cheers again

Hi everybody thanks for your help.
I have just read the thread started by ex-182 and it is excellent regarding the wrong oil put in by Arnold Clark dealerships.
Arnold Clark seem to use 10w 40 as standard even if it is the wrong oil for your car.
They know it is wrong but are still doing it.
Anyone needing more info read ex-182 thread it will give you lots of advice and info.
Hope this helps and thanks everyone for posting.

Thanks for that. I've just been reading through that thread started by EX-182, found it very interesting.

What damage can 10w40 do to the engine? I am a little concerned as at around 55k miles, the engine was replaced under warranty due to something related to oil. I don't know exactly what the reasoning behind it was, as it was before I owned the car, so I don't know if the vicosity of the oil was to blame or not.

The car is now on 127k miles, so the engine will be on around 70-75k miles. It appears to be running OK, but I'm wondering if this might have any affects on the engine.

Edit I've just checked my booklet and I can see that the last time it was serviced (Courtesy of Jiraffe for the parts and cheap labour), it used 5w30, which is fine... but previously it has been running on 10w40 since new, over two engines. Could this have caused any long term damage?
