Hi, we recently put a second hand gearbox in our car as ours went. Got it working after a few teething problems and it drove great. Today however something isn't right, trying to pull away at roundabouts ect there just didn't seem to be much power and it didn't feel like 1st gear, also driving along at 60 and as soon as we took our foot off the accelerator the revs would drop down to idle, the same as it was in very high revs at a steady 60mph, the smell inside the car was horrendous burnt oil. Hubby has dropped all the gearbox oil and even though it is still a nice cherry red it stunk. We also lost reverse until the oil change now thats back but it takes a while to engage and is very clunky and jumps back in spurts. Sorry for the long post but this car has my head battered and we can't keep throwing money at it.

Sounds like the replacement gearbox has gone the same way as the original. If you do fit yet another replacement gearbox, or have your current one rebuilt, it is essential that a separate gearbox oil cooler is fitted, don't use the one built in to the water radiator. I would suggest getting an auto gearbox specialist to properly diagnose your faults.

Hi thank you for the reply, we looked up some things and everything seemed to be pointing to the torque converter (which we didn't replace the first time), also we had a lot of play where the driveshafts go into the gearbox which also meant gearbox broken as well. We have changed it again along with the torque converter and the car has done around 300 miles with no issues what so ever, so finger crossed it's fixed fully now!
