View Full Version : CDTi (150) vs 1.6 Turbo Fuel Economy

Can I have a straw poll on what sort of fuel economy I should expect from my brand new Astra SRi CDTi (150)? The official figure is approximately 48mpg but I would expect around 42mpg in the real world, certainly no less than 40mpg.

I have only done 150 miles and the trip computer assessment of average fuel economy is about 34mpg!! Will the economy improve dramatically over the next few hundred miles as the engine loosens up or is mine a dud lol?

I bought my diesel on the basis that it had stonking performance and good fuel economy. The 1.6T petrol has similar performance but its quoted average mpg is 36.7mpg (equivalent to my old 1.8 petrol) but I bet the 1.6T does much less in the real world. Any 1.6T owners out there who can give us an idea of real world fuel economy? I want reassurance that I have bought the right engine!

Thanks in advance.

my 1.6t fuel economy is something like 27-28 mpg hope this makes you feel better about your diesel
so it looks like you have picked the right engine

Thanks Creesey, your input is much appreciated. I reckon that all mpg figures are exaggerated so if my diesel is doing 14mpg below the quoted figure then chances are the 1.6T petrol will do the same. I am expecting the economy to pick up once the engine loosens up and I have worked out the best driving style. I am used to having 5 gears, not 6, so I find myself cruising in 4th quite often at the moment - perhaps if I change up to 5th I pick up an extra mpg or two.

I would suggest you get more use of those other gears, and you might see your mpg go up. I have a 150bhp and I would have thought that 5th would more than achievable in cruising mode. I would have thought 4th would be to high a gear for cruising.
Also, expect that your mpg will increase as the engine beds in.

Good Luck

as above after only 150 miles on the clock you cant really get an acurate reading as the engine will take time to settle, might aswell use the extra gear should make a slight difference, are you doin short or long journeys?

The diesel improves in both economy and performance as it beds in. My last Sport Hatch had an average 49mpg showing for the life of the car.

THe current one has only covered 5k and has just made the jump to 45mpg average since new.

Only got 160 on the clock and about 38mpg but I think it needs a bit of time and a good boot then things will get better

The fuel economy will improve vastly by the time you hit 1,000 miles bud :)

Give is chance to bed in ;)

The engine will take a bit of time to bed in. It should gradually get more efficient and quicker as it loosens up.

Over 10k I've got a total average of 43.8mpg.

In the first 1k, mine averaged 40.9, I reset mine every tankful, but it varies between 43 and 48 now.
