ESC light and Code 68

Hi,

I bought an Astra J, 10 plate 1.6 petrol (Exclusiv), about four months ago and every now and again the ESC light has come on as I've been driving it. I didn't think much about it but last week it came on and stayed on, started beeping and showing Code 68 on the computer. I took it to a local garage who, at first, thought it was a problem with the alternator but after replacing it found out that it wasn't that and put the original back in. After spending a couple of days trying to find out what it was they said they weren't sure and we should take it to a Vauxhall dealer but that it hadn't happened since they put our alternator back in and "reset the system".

So I decided to give a few days and see if it had magically fixed itself. Driving home tonight and it happened again. ECS light on constantly, beeping and Code 68.

There's no way I'm taking it back to that garage as they're chuffing useless but I'm reluctant to take it to a dealer as they're so expensive. I'm at a loss as to what to do as I've already paid out ÂŁ300 to that other garage and can't really afford a huge bill. I do have a local family friend who's a mechanic so I'm thinking of asking him to have a look but if one garage couldn't figure it out I'm not sure whether he'll be able to either.

Does anyone know if this is a common problem or what it could be? I'd be grateful for any information as I'm clueless with this stuff.

Cheers.

Sorry, just seen your reply. Yeah, I did get this issue fixed eventually and it was fixed via a Vauxhall dealer after a non-Vauxhall garage had no clue what it was. It turned out to be a loose wire which was flailing around as I drove and rubbing on things thereby breaking the connection to the computer. They re-insulated the wire and tied it down and I haven't had a problem since. It cost me enough to find out that's what it was, though!

EDIT: Incidentally, I notice you're in Yorkshire too. It was the Parkgate, Rotherham branch that fixed the issue for me so you could get whichever dealer you've used to speak to them about it, maybe.

Dealer has just rung, it turns out they have fitted the wrong parts to the car :sus: apparently Vauxhall had the part numbers listed incorrectly so they have ordered the correct parts and are confident that the problem will be resolved. He couldn't apologise enough. I'm just happy its nothing major as they suspected yesterday.

Roll on Monday!
