Loud hammering and banging on tickover and when clutched pressed.

Total failure, cannot change gear!

Depends where you get it done and who you know. Main dealer, I bet 1200 ish. Independant 700+.

main dealer near me was around 700 when mine was done according to the paperwork( was done under warranty so the bill was sent to them)

I sometimes get this too!

It only happens for a few seconds (I poss let the clutch out as I always start the car with the clutch depressed) and then goes away. Sounds like it's coming from the passenger side of the engine bay (RH as you look at it from the front). Only happens once in maybe 25 starts.

Which side of the engine is the DMF on? I think it is the passenger side?

DMF + gearbox on on the passenger side of the engine, with the gearbox visible though the offside wheel arch.

Does it have a dmf on a Astra thought it was only twin tops

just a word of caution, when mines was put in for diagnosis, I was informed that may still be charged since the only proper way to check the condition of the flywheel is to remove the gearbox, now if the DMF was found to be faulty then I didn't have to pay a penny since the labour would be covered by the warranty, but if they discovered nothing was wrong or that it was the clutch that was faulty I would be charged labour rates for the removal of the gearbox.

the 1.9 diesels and the VXR have the DMF, not too sure on the 1.7's or 1.3 derv tho.

You're thinking of DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter).

Nearly all modern Diesels, and some petrols, have dual mass flywheels.

Oh yeah lol
I'll shut my mouth for being so stupid

Soooo the consensus is that unless you're getting vibration through the clutch pedal, difficulty selecting gears or the noise discussed earlier nearly all the time on start up then the DMF is probably okay?

I'd still like to know what that intermittent noise is on startup; it must be something and seems to be happening to at least a few of the 16v 1.9cdti

I've got this problem too.

I changed my flywheel and it still existed so i dont know if its linked.

I opened the bonnet and told somebody to start the car to see if i can locate it. Theres a little bottle thing right at the back of the engine bay slightly on the passengers side, and everytime the car was started, it was being rubbed against the body. so I put some plastic polystyrene between it and the body and voila! fixed :)

Well I've had 2 dmf's fitted within the last month and the noise is still there, it's sounding pretty loud now, sounds like when a washing machine is over loaded but only when I turn the engine over to start it, as soon as its running I have no noise And it purrs real nice

I'm getting a light vibration that I can hear when I press the clutch down on tickover. It goes away if I increase the revs a little or take my foot off the clutch.

I'm actually hoping it's my simota rubbing on the engine mount
